Are you an amateur filmmaker who never got formal training or someone who has never picked up a camera? Well you’re exactly the person we had in mind when we created the Filmmaker Boot Camp! There are an endless number of online tutorials, but this is the only chance in the Modesto-area to get hands on experience. Are you ready to step away from the screen and onto the set?

What We Do

The Filmmaker Boot Camp is a five-day intensive experience where high school students will have a chance to learn the basics of modern video production with experienced mentors. During short lessons and production exercises, students will receive the foundations of filmmaking knowledge that will prepare them for their time on set. The big highlight of the workshop is when the students split into productions crews and work with each other on the set of a film directed by the mentors. Students will implement their new found knowledge and work as a team to produce a professional looking short film. The films are then presented at a premiere at the State Theatre on Saturday July 27th for all of their family, friends, and fellow students to see.

Equipment

The main obstacle holding back young filmmakers is access to equipment. That's why we supply Boot Camp students with everything they need to make a film. The only thing they need to bring is a notebook, pen, and passion.

We chose equipment that is powerful and affordable for most students to be able to save up and buy themselves. The main tool the students learn with is the Panasonic Lumix G7 4k Mirrorless Camera.

When and Where

The Boot Camp is held at the State Theatre of Modesto beginning Monday July 6 through Friday, July 10.

Each day starts at 8am and ends at 12pm.

Parents/Guardians should plan to pick up their students between 12 and 12:30pm. Our mentor will be there until 12:30 to talk to students and answer any questions they have about filmmaking, film as a career, or just talk about our favorite movies.

The workshop ends with a Premiere of the short films at the State Theatre of Modesto on Saturday, July 25. All students are encouraged to bring their friends and families to see their work come to life.

Who We Are

You will be guided through the workshop by an experienced filmmaker and Modesto local, Andrew Wong.

Andrew is the creator of the Filmmaker Boot Camp and Re:Told Productions. For the past 10 years he has filmed dozens of short films, music videos, and promotional videos. In 2013 he directed a short that was shown at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 and in 2015 filmed and edited a short documentary that won the AT&T Student Filmmaker Award at CAAM Film Fest 2017. He has two years of film education under his belt teaching elementary and high school students in the Bay Area with the Latino Film Institute and the California Film Institute. "Now I want to share my knowledge with my hometown of Modesto and inspire the next generation of filmmakers."

Refund Policy

Find out you’re going on vacation and want to remove your student from the program? That’s totally fine! If your student can’t attend all days of the workshop for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible so we can allow another student to take their place.

A refund will be issued if the cancellation is made more than 1 week prior to the first day of the workshop. Final day to request a refund for this workshop is July 1st. A small processing fee will be applied. Cancellations after July 1st, a refund will not be issued.

The students work in teams. If a member can’t attend all days of the workshop then that team is put at a disadvantage- so we ask that students ensure they can attend all days of the workshop.
